STATEMENT

A lot of Teresa’s earlier work was shaped by how she observed nature. Now, how she connects ideas through thinking, reading and conversations shapes her work. The feeling of spontaneity and instinctive visual storytelling invites you into her paintings. Colour guides the process.

Adding layers to create marks and forms that speak to each other are the initial starting point. Working intuitively without a predetermined outcome gives her the feeling of adventure. Words regularly throw themselves on the canvas. They are part of the story.

Teresa is a happy introvert, the solitary life suits her very well. She thrives on connecting with that inner space. She calls it her freedom zone.

Her paintings can be interpreted as conversations in her head of which she sometimes doesn’t understand the language. There is always a story, big or small, in each painting. Sometimes the story only reveals itself long after the painting is finished. She wonders about this process and is always trying to unravel it.

BIO

Born in Ireland in 1966, she left home and went abroad at the age of 19 with two bags. One was a green rucksack of clothes and the other was a blue back-pack full of oil paints, brushes, pastels, a couple of boards and some old rags. That bag travelled around with her for a very long time until it was so dirty she chucked it out. She didn’t spend a lot of time painting early on. She spent too much time being in awe of the work of other artists. Life got in the way and after years of under-nurturing, her confidence was floored. It took a long time to understand the importance of not listening to other peoples' comments about what she should or should not do with her life and to believe in herself. At forty she began to paint with real conviction.

She believes that having lived in a multicultural environment for almost twenty five years has greatly influenced how she sees life through a wide angle lense.

She is also a fluent French speaker.
